Ambitious as I am I first started out with these newsletters with the intention to send them out weekly. What was I thinking?!
For context, not only am I a caramel woman with disabilities who is daily fighting for a penny simply because I do not get the same recognition as my palm-colored peers, hence also not the same pay. Being disabled makes me a full-on spoonie, meaning I have to deal with 3x the work or a regular person with only 20% of the physical capacity to perform it.
And I am social, eager to help others and forget myself. So after a very honest look at myself and despite wanting to share to much more so much more often, I have to cut these newsletters to monthly and sometimes twice a month if we’re having a good one.
Nonetheless, you can find me online on Podcasts and mostly Clubhouse if you want the most up-to-date version of my pop culture insights on Genre and Anime/Manga.
Meanwhile, I was also on Dutch TV for Pride talking about the significance of culture, decolonization, and queerness. And I was live in the Spinsters of Horror podcast talking about Extreme Horror/Cinema on an expert panel.
Check my Twitter and newly built personal website (rabiasitabi.com) for links.
So next edition will be less “outdated”, but this one still has lots of goodies.
Feel free to send me your feedback and questions btw! On any of my socials or hello@rabiasitabi.com
I am currently watching movies for/at Fantasia Film Fest, expect blogs and mostly Podcasts about them soon and watch my Letterboxd page for updates!
Movies
(You can find my reviews and scores for the movies I recommend on my Letterboxd page)
Jujutsu Kaisen: 0 Movie Teaser! - MAPPA is bringing us heat and backstory with the Yuta prequel to JJK this December out in Japan.
Fear street Trilogy - [Netflix] 1994, 1976, 1666; If you grew up on Goosebumps as I did, this is the more extreme and balls to the wall version of that. An original R.L. Stine story adapted over 3 films that overlap to give you a true horror tale that has it all from the genre: Slashers, Witches, Monsters, and more…
Kingdom: Ashin of the North - [Netflix] If you’ve watched Kingdom, the South Korean Zombie/ Political drama series like I told you to, then you are now ready for the Kingdom Movie!
PIG - [Streaming] Nicolas Cage in an anti-John Wick-film about a Pig. WATCH IT
A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.
TV
Loki - [Disney+] the perfect SuperWhoLock mixture by Marvel. The series has finished by now, so you can binge the whole thing, but! pay attention to the Multi-verse clues.
Castlevania - [Netflix] Final (?) season of the adventures of our magical trio. The battle we’ve been working towards.
Trese - [Netflix] An amazing Filipino animation horror series about their Aswang (Filipino demons and monsters) made by Filipinos! based on the Filipino komik series of the same name by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo.
OK Computer - [Disney+ or Hotstar] Sci-Fi from India is very very rare and this series hits all the notes amazingly. I want more more more. There is this amazing density in each scene, so much comedy and references to series and writers such as the Community, the Office as well as Douglas Adams. Please go watch this! They manage to bring sci-fi comedy in a clever way that is still very distinctly Indian.
The year is 2031. In a New India - of towering smart holograms and drone superhighways - hard-boiled Cyber Crime detective Saajan Kundu is called out of retirement when a self-driving taxi is hacked and ordered to kill an anonymous human victim.
Record of Ragnarok - [Netflix] Every 1000 years, the Gods' Council assembles to decide the fate of humanity. After 7 million years of human history, the gods come to the decision that humans are irredeemable and must be extinct.
Chainsaw Man Trailer - MAPPA is owning 2021 and I’ve been waiting for a year for just a trailer. Please read the 97 chapter manga if you have the opportunity. It has inspirations from Tsutomu Nihei, and Geiger.
Solo Leveling becomes an Anime - The explosively popular webtoon turned manhwa (South Korean manga) is getting adapted by, you guessed it, MAPPA.
Books, Comics & Brain Food
Lonely Receiver - Zac Thompson Jen Hickman; Visceral, uncomfortable, queer, and lonely. This horror sci-fi comic has it all and makes you clench your teeth while reading. Trigger warnings for abuse, assault, body horror.
